Living with a disability can be challenging. It is estimated that around 18% of the population have a disability. Sadly, many of these individuals continue to experience discrimination and stigma. People living with a disability may experience challenges such as accessing appropriate care, prejudice from others in everyday life, bullying in schools and the workplace. Our director, Jodie Brenton and head psychologist, Mary Magalotti strive to support those living with a disability by making service accessible and inclusive. If you or someone you love is affected by discrimination, it is important to remember that help and support are available.
The Centre of Research Excellence in Disability and Health (CRE-DH) reports that 14% of people with a disability report experience discrimination – this increases to 20.4% for people aged 15 to 24. Living with a disability that causes discrimination can be highly stressful and emotionally exhausting, and the assistance of a professional counsellor can help you manage difficult feelings and situations, and provide advice when things are hard.
