Although over four million Australians have a disability, discrimination continues to affect people across the country. From inaccessible venues and stores, to discrimination or even bullying in schools and the workplace, living with a disability means constantly navigating the preconceptions and biases of others.
If you or someone you love for has been affected by disability-based discrimination, you might not know where to turn for emotional support. At Life Resolutions, we offer NDIS claimable counselling to support you or the person you care for.
Discrimination and Mental Health
Even disability-based discrimination is illegal in Australia, many people with disabilities continue to bear the weight of others outdated beliefs and untrue stereotypes. The Centre of Research Excellence in Disability and Health (CRE-DH) found that that 14% of Australians reported experiencing disability-based discrimination in the past year, while for people aged 15 to 24, these same numbers were over 20%.
The CRE-DH research study also demonstrated a link between disability-based discrimination and poor health outcomes – the stress response that occurs when discrimination is encountered is likely to raise blood pressure, and cause further health concerns. As discrimination can occur when seeking work or study, socioeconomic disadvantage can also be another outcome. These factors indicate that not only are Australians with a disability more prone to mental health concerns, but they are also less likely to find accessible care and support.
The impact of stigma and discrimination on mental health can be immense. The assistance of a mental health professional can help you navigate each day when things are tough.
